A careful first move

Get rid of an awkward letter without opening the board.

Learn the tactic

A defensive opening is a short, fairly valuable word that clears awkward tiles, takes no hooks and uses letters that rarely form two-letter words. Your opponent then has little room to reply.

Remember

When opening, check your word for hooks. A word without hooks is hard to build on.

Find your own move without seeing the answer. Hints remain available, but using them makes this an assisted attempt.
