How to Make Marbled Paper Using the Ebru Method

Prepare the sodium alginate size

Weigh 7-8g of sodium alginate per liter of water, sprinkle it slowly into blending water, top up with the rest of the water, and blend for 20 seconds. Pour into a bottle and let it rest overnight to release air bubbles.

Prepare the paints

Mix gouache with water (about 1/3 teaspoon of paint to 2 teaspoons of water) and add one drop of ox gall so the paint floats on the surface of the size instead of sinking.

Test the paints on a small tray

Drop the prepared paint onto a small test tray filled with size and watch whether the drops sink or spread too much. Adjust the water and ox gall ratio until the paint behaves correctly.

Apply paint to the size and draw a pattern

Drop 2-3 colors of paint onto the main tray of size, then use a stick, wire, or toothpick to draw your chosen pattern across the surface.

Transfer the pattern onto paper

Lay a sheet of paper onto the size, then lift it at a 45-degree angle while resting it against the edge of the tray to remove excess size.

Dry and flatten the marbled sheet

Hang the marbled paper to dry using clips or lay it on newspaper. The next day, flatten the dry sheet under a bookbinding press or a board weighed down with clamps.
